The truth about indie bookstores

In honor of California Bookstore Day, here’s the truth about why I sometimes say mean things about indies: I’m scared they won’t accept me so I preemptively push them away.

But I’m glad you’re there. I just bought The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster and The Restless Supermarket by Ivan Vladislavić, both of which I wouldn’t have known of without their indie bookstore displays. And I wrote down a couple names for later, too. So, like my girlfriends, indie bookstores, I do love you, but I can’t tell you that.
